Please check back here often as we
update this page detailing a new program for
Summer 2010.
It may be winter now, but the time to think about summer adventure has arrived! This summer Unalayee will be offering its 5th Walkabout program, a 30-day backpacking adventure, which can be described with one word: Epic.
What: The 2010 Walkabout is an opportunity to have the time of your life. We have an itinerary of 20 hiking days and 10 layover days, which gives us time to learn how to make fire with sticks, jump into clear mountain streams and lakes, climb the highest peaks, stalk and observe wild animals, catch trout and experience what it is like to fall asleep under the stars every night, after a full day and a warm campfire.
Where:The first part of the Walkabout will focus on rock climbing skills. We will head out on the Log Lake trail, culminating with an ascent of Butterbrick Peak. Later we will head out to the White Mountains, the most
beautiful area of the Trinity Alps, to explore the gorgeous, enchanted areas around Grizzly, Mirror and Sapphire Lakes before making our way back to base camp.
We want to spend time in the most magical, unexplored places in the Trinities. Therefore, our focus will be on the wilderness experience and discovery, not on covering as many miles as possible. Because we will be
traveling to pristine, less-visited lakes, about half of the miles we hike will be cross-country.
Leaders: TBD.
When: Friday, July 2nd - Sunday, July 25th, 2010
Who: Returning Unalayee campers
or campers with previous multi-day backpacking experience.
Participants must be at least 14 years old and in good
physical condition. Participants must submit a 250-word
statement
explaining why they want to go on the Walkabout.
